Receiving Ringio phone calls on your computer softphone

You can receive Ringio phone calls on your computer even if you don't have a physical handset, such as one for a landline, a cellphone, or an IP phone.  (If you have a physical handset, see this article: http://support.ringio.com/entries/368387-receiving-ringio-phone-cal...)

Softphones such as X-lite can be installed and configured on your computer to work just as if you had a physical phone.  Here's how to set it up.

We will give you SIP access when you become a Ringio customer.  If you aren't currently a Ringio customer, contact our sales department today 888-727-5776 to activate your subscription.

Step 1: Download and install a softphone.

Ringio and InPhonex are SIP software... they work with any SIP-compliant softphone. If you don't have a favorite one, we'd suggest starting with Counterpath X-Lite, which is free and works well.

Step 2: Configure the softphone with your Inphonex virtual number

This will allow your softphone to register with the SIP servers of InPhonex and let the servers know when you are online and can receive phone calls.

X-Lite configuration instructions for Inphonex.

If you're using X-Lite 4.0, here are a couple of screenshots to help you, since the interface has slightly changed.

Then click OK. If everything works as expected, you should now see a green light by the account in the Account list

If you are having problems getting the softphone to register, it is most likely because of firewall issues and you may want to check the InPhonex troubleshooting section at the bottom of this webpage

For more information on network settings we have a firewall configuration guide.

Step 3: configure Ringio to ring your softphone via SIP

There's two ways of doing this:

Via the administration website: (if you are the administrator and have multiple phones to enter)

Or via the Ringio Desktop application (if you are an end user)

Now you're configured and you can try calling one of your Ringio phone numbers and see how it ends up on the softphone.

Notes:

  • If you got your InPhonex Virtual Number from Ringio Support, you will not be able to make phone calls from the softphone. Instead, you would make the phone calls using the outbound calling capabilities of Ringio. See how outbound calling works.
  • For best voice quality results, make sure you use a headset... audio quality is severly degraded by using the speakers and microphone built into your computer.
  • For a list of configuration instructions for different devices head over to InPhonex.
  • You can configure the outbound caller ID with the Ringio desktop application.  The caller ID will be passed in outbound calls when you initiate calls with the Ringio app.

We will give you SIP access when you become a Ringio customer.  If you aren't currently a Ringio customer, contact our sales department today 888-727-5776 to activate your subscription.

Sam, quick easy question for you here.  I likely will use Ringio exclusively with cellular phones and most of them will be Verizon Android powered devices where I use the Ringio Mobile App.  However, as you may be aware, Verizon does not permit an end user to connect a cellular broadband data connection and a voice connection simultaneously.  (Some of the newer Droid's do permit cellular voice & WIFI data connections however)

So, in some cases I will need to connect to cellular data and carry on a cellular voice conversation so I'm looking for a solution here.  In your post above, on image 2 for User ID you list "8797950".  Did you obtain this User ID from IphoneX when you signed up for service with them?  If so, is that exclusively for you or is that a Ringio user ID for all Ringio subscribers?  If it is not for all Ringio subscribers, we must sign up for an account with IphoneX, right?  If so, can you recommend a plan?

Also, for password you list "provided by Ringio".  Is this the same password we use to connect our Ringio desktop application?  If not, how do we obtain this password from Ringio?

Lastly, do you know of the IphoneX service & the Xlite4 soft phone has the ability to make/receive calls over a cellular broadband 3G connection?  (Do you have any experience with this?)

Thanks,

Does Ringio also play nicely with Gizmo5 or other SIP devices?

I already have a gizmo5 account that I would prefer to use, rather than sign up for a new voip account.

I just signed up for the 30 day trial and would like to use Ringio with a softphone.  This article states that to do this I would need to get an InPhonex account and the Counterpath softphone. Is that still the case? What is the difference between Ringio and InPhonex? I thought all I'd need would be Ringio and a software.
